Tennis: two names and one rule most people skip

Tennis has the simplest structure in the sportsbook: two players, no draw, a match played to a winner. That simplicity makes it a good place to learn how a market works. It is also where one particular clause causes more disputes than anything else in betting — retirement.

A two-way market, a simple calculation

Two outcomes mean the margin is directly recoverable: convert both prices into probabilities and add them. Anything over one hundred per cent is the operator's share. The conversion is described on the bet types page. In tennis this calculation earns its keep, because a favourite's price can be very short and the proportional cost correspondingly large.

Retirement is the line that matters

Matches end early through injury or retirement more often in tennis than in most sports, and the rules covering that differ between markets. Some return the stake; others settle the result as soon as a single ball has been played. The difference is monetary and entirely readable in advance — it sits in the market terms and belongs there before the bet, not after. If a dispute follows anyway, the route is on the complaints page.

Games handicaps

When a favourite's outright price is very short, two options remain: accept an unattractive price or move to a handicap. A games handicap measures the margin of victory rather than the winner, and against a strong favourite it is often the only market where the odds are worth considering. The same reasoning applies to set-score markets, which bet on the exact shape of the match.

Surface knowledge is already priced

Surfaces change how a ball behaves and therefore whose strengths come through. That is true, and it is also known to the market. The price contains that judgement before a bettor thinks about it, which means general knowledge about surfaces confers no edge. An edge would require information the market lacks, and that is not something a portal can promise anyone.

The live market

Tennis is exceptionally active in play, because every game changes the score and the prices with it. Hence the sport's principal cost: the number of bets. A single match can present dozens of decision points, each carrying its own margin. Capping the count before the match starts works better than capping the amount during it — the reasoning is on the betting page and the tools on the responsible gambling page.

Everything else

The minimum odds requirement on sports campaigns applies here too — see the bonus terms page. The cashier is shared across the platform and mapped on the payments page. Other sports are on the football, basketball and cricket pages, and the overview starts on the home page.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if a player retires?
Rules differ between markets: some return the stake, others settle the result once a single ball has been played. That line has to be read before the bet.
Why is there no draw in tennis?
Because a match is played to a winner. That makes the market two-way and the margin straightforward to calculate.
What does a games handicap measure?
The gap in games rather than in points. Against a short-priced favourite it is often the only market where the odds are worth anything.
Does the surface affect the result?
It affects playing style and therefore who is favoured. The market already prices that in, so surface knowledge alone provides no edge.
